What is avant-garde creativity in a quasi-apocalyptic post-Covid world that’s still recovering from the surreal nightmare of Donald Trump-era politics? What is the relationship between reality and imagination in our landscape of ubiquitous content? Man Under Table OR: I’m Writing a Movie, Noel David Taylor’s feature-length directorial debut film, magnifies these questions. It works against conventions and viewer expectations to macably majestic effect. A film like this deserves an uncommon review. So this article challenges readers by weaving together an analysis of the film and an interview with Taylor. The threads seek to push you out of your comfort zone in much the same way as Man Under Table.

BRIARCLIFF ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES U.S RIGHTS TO BRYAN FOGEL’S ‘THE DISSIDENT’

Briarcliff Entertainment announced today the acquisition of domestic distribution rights to THE DISSIDENT, the highly anticipated film from Bryan Fogel (Academy Award-winning director of ICARUS), and today they released the films first trailer. Following the films world premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews, Briarcliff is planning a theatrical and VOD release in late 2020 along with other events to coincide with the second anniversary of Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination. HanWay Films will handle international sales of the film. UTA Independent Film Group orchestrated both the domestic distribution deal, and the international sales deal on behalf of the filmmaking team.

Review – Boys State (2020)

Every year, in each individual state, an event happens that gathers 1100 adolescent boys to participate in tradition called Boys State. The American Legion sponsored program shows these inspired young men the ins and outs of politics through the course of a strenuous seven days, where they must form a mock government. By the end, the Legion hopes that the young men will be made aware of the politics, democracy, and effort it takes to running a successful campaign. Famous political figures such as Dick Cheney, Corey Booker, Bill Clinton, Rush Limbaugh, and many others, have participated in this event. Directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBride guide us through a world that includes all the juicy aspects of politics: unity, idealism, hope, and backstabbing. Is this peek into the 85 year old institution worth the ride?

Review – Little Monsters (2019): Fantasia International Film Festival!

It’s Day 2 of the Fantasia International Film Festival  and I started the evening with the Quebec Premiere of the Australian zombie comedy Little Monsters. It had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in their Midnight Program back in January. It then went on to play at SXSW and the Calgary Underground Film Festival. The film was written and directed by Abe Forsythe and stars Lupita Nyong’o, Alexander England, and Josh Gad.

RLJE Films Acquires “ARIZONA”

RLJE Films has acquired all North American rights to Arizona, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  The directorial debut of Jonathan Watson (HBO’s “Vice Principals”), the film was written by Luke Del Tredici (FOX’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).  Arizona stars Danny McBride (Pineapple Express), Rosemarie DeWitt (Poltergeist), Luke Wilson (Idiocracy), Elizabeth Gillies (CW’s “Dynasty”) and Kaitlin Olson (FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”).  RLJE Films plans to release Arizona in theaters in summer 2018.
