Review – Da 5 Bloods (2020)

For almost 40 years, Spike Lee has made some of the most memorable films to come out of Hollywood. His works are full of black pride, black history, and the overall nature of the black experience. With that being said, it took him 35 years to finally get an Oscar nomination. That one was for the incredible 2018 film, Blackkklansman which featured amazing performances by Adam Driver and John David Washington, son of Denzel, who has every bit of his father’s swagger and gift for performance. In the recent years, directors are flocking towards Netflix, because as we saw with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Alfonso Cauron’s Roma, both my picks for best picture in their respective years, the studio lets the artist do their thing with little to no involvement. It’s now Spike’s turn, so how did he do?

Review – Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Contemplative and uncompromising, Spike Lee’s latest movie, Da 5 Bloods, offers a look at four black Vietnam vets and long time friends who return to Vietnam to retrieve both the U.S. gold they hid during a mission and the body of a fellow fallen soldier, Stormin’ Norman. Things get complicated when one of the vets, played by Delroy Lindo, goes his own way and manages to complicate things for the crew. It also doesn’t help that his son, played by Jonathan Majors, has shown up to get a share of the gold.

Review – War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

There should have never been a Planet Of The Apes reboot, a prequel series chronicling the events that led to the destruction of humanity and the rise of the apes. It was a ridiculous concept that should’ve never made it passed the conception, but it did make it. Through this whole trilogy, from Rise to Dawn to War, this franchise has proven itself one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies of the modern age. With War For The Planet Of The Apes, they end this series in the perfect way to create one of the most personal and morally complex blockbusters out there today.

Independence Day: Resurgence continues 20 years since the events of the first movie and the Americans have been using alien technology to defend the world from aliens and the whole world has achieved world peace as a means to work together to avoid any future attacks on Earth. It turns out that the aliens are about to make another attack on Earth. Things seem to be going okay until signs of another attack begin to appear and it’s up to Bill Pullman’s former US President Whitmore, who’s been left traumatized by the aliens and Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson, who’s now serving as an advisor as he investigates the recent signs appearing around the world.
