Cinephellas Podcast – Episode 18 (Interview with Nicholas Bushman)

Playing and Praying for Life: A Conversation with Nicholas Bushman

By Christopher M. Rzigalinski

On this edition of the Cinephellas Podcast I’m chatting with director Nicholas Bushman about the DVD and Blu Ray releases of his movie Union Furnace, both out on August 15th. Union Furnace tells the story of Cody, a small-town criminal, played by Mike Dwyer, with little going for him. After crashing a stolen car, the mysterious Lion, played by the brilliantly sadistically Seth Hammond, offers Cody the chance for financial security and a way out of their small Ohio town. The only condition is that Cody must win an 8 round life or death competition against other town misfits. Only by avoiding death can he begin living.

Celebrate ‘The Lost Boys’ 30th Anniversary with the Sequel Comic!

It’s the 30th Anniversary of the vampire cult-classic film, The Lost Boys, and Vertigo is celebrating with the release of a new sequel comic collected edition! THE LOST BOYS is the comic sequel to the nostalgic ‘80s thriller, marking the return of the Frog and Emerson brothers. The town of Santa Clara has long been a haven to an unruly threat—a group of vampires busy feasting on the locals. And now, following the events that led to the death of the coven’s head vampire, Michael and Sam and the rest of the city are attempting a return to a “normal” life—but that won’t last long. Soon, Michael and Sam Emerson find themselves, once again, immersed into the dark and twisted world of vampires, and in need of help from the militant vampire hunters Edgar and Allan Frog. As the brothers take on a whole new group of undead bloodsuckers—the Blood Belles—they’ll soon find help in the form of a shirtless sax man, aka the Believer (if you can believe it). Your favorite blood-and-fangs flick continues here!

Writer Tim Seeley (NIGHTWING, Hack/Slash) and artist Scott Godlewski (THE DARK & BLOODY, Copperhead) deliver a gruesome and stylish return to the bloody boardwalks of Santa Clara. The comic trade is available next Wednesday 8/9, in comic stores, and available everywhere books are sold Tuesday, 8/15.

Review – Bad Genius (2017) Fantasia International Film Festival!

by Vincent Leblanc

On Day 4 of the Fantasia Festival, I had one screening in the afternoon. This film tempted me very much after reading about it and watching the trailer. And it seems I was not the only one to be interested because it was the first of two sold out screenings (ed.: they’ve now added a third screening). A guy even offered me $40 for my ticket that I paid $9 for while I was waiting in the line to enter the theater! This was the Canadian Premiere of the Thai film Bad Genius (Chalard Games Goeng or Chalat Kem Kong, the latter of which is, apparently, the transliteration of it’s original title ฉลาดเกมส์โกง in Thai script).

Killing Ground (2017) – Interview with Harriet Dyer

Anatomy of Salvation: A Conversation with Harriet Dyer

by Christopher M. Rzigalinski

Attending Catholic school for half my life taught me that salvation meant being saved from damnation by Jesus Christ. The contours of that salvation were difficult to define, though. The very thought that I, an ordinary person, was empowered enough to save myself, let alone others, was overwhelming. Since becoming an adult, however, I’ve been thrust into the role of protector several times. No discrediting Christian doctrine, but it’s equally as important to validate the agency of individual human beings.
