Review – Don’t Breathe (2016)

“Don’t Breathe” asks you to take sides with criminals who decide to rob an Iraq Veteran who has been dealt a terrible bunch of cards in life: he is blind and lost his daughter in a car accident. Of course, the two of the three criminals are given character traits and back stories for you to feel that what they are doing is completely justified. This isn’t anything new in Hollywood, sometimes it is fun to side with the bad guys and see what living life in sin is like for a while. Usually though, characters ride the wave of pleasure until reality smacks them in the face. In this movie, reality does more than smack our main characters in the face, it beats them over the head with it and takes no prisoners.

Review – Sully (2016)

“Sully” has to be one of the shortest movies that has its eye on the Oscar that I’ve seen in a long time.   As with the incident, which only lasted 208 seconds, the movie is short and is piloted by an expert.   While Sully successfully landed the plane in the Hudson, Clint Eastwood guides this story quickly and  to the point.

Many people gawked at the remake to The Evil Dead, Sam Raimi’s influential no-budget horror classic seemed too lightening-in-a-bottle to work as a remake. But in the hands of first-time filmmaker Fede Alvarez, 2013’s Evil Dead proved itself a worthy reboot. However there were some who criticise the film for its shock and gore so in response, Alvarez follow-on was to be an original piece, focusing more on the tension than the gore and terrify the audience rather than sicken them.

Don’t Breathe is that response.

Review – Bad Moms (2016)

As the time passes in Hollywood, women are gaining more and more power within the industry.   This year, an all female “Ghostbusters” hit the cinemas with a mixed word of mouth and an underwhelming box office draw.    Next year, we are getting an all female reboot of “Ocean’s 11.”     Thankfully, “Bad Moms” is an original idea that is both insightful, well acted, and, at parts, hilarious.

Review – Sausage Party

It is not often that we as an audience get an R rated animated film in theaters. Studios are typically hesitant when one of these films gets thrown on their desk, and it takes an incredibly strong pitch for them to see the light of day. This is why the trailer for Sausage Party seemed like a breath of fresh air when it was released a few months ago. It seemed like a wholly original and potentially shocking film. After finally seeing Sausage Party, this writer can certainly say it is a unique and shocking film, just not in a positive way.

Review – The Shallows (2016)

Shark movies have a difficult time getting noticed because they’re all inevitable going to be compared to Jaws, and rightfully so, in this niche genre Jaws isn’t just top of the pile, it’s wearing a crown made of shark teeth and sitting on a throne of bones. There have been a few that have made their mark, Deep Blue Sea for embracing the silliness of its own concept and the Sharknado franchise for just being plain silly. The Shallows might not be the next great shark movie, but for what it is, it’s one of the better low-key thrillers we’ve had for a while and a reminder of why people have been scared to go in the water for over 40 years.

Review – Suicide Squad

By now you’ve read many reviews on Suicide Squad. I’m sure they’ve ranged anywhere from, “THIS WAS A TOTAL SHITSHOW DEATH TO EVERYONE INVOLVED” to “OMG THIS WAS AMAZING DEATH TO ALL WHO OPPOSE THIS VIEWPOINT”. And honestly, these passionate opinions are based in some truth; there were really good parts and very, very bad parts. But after seeing the movie I’m not sure how anyone can feel that strongly about anything as mediocre as it was. Let me explain.
