Review – Boys State (2020)

by Kevin Muller

Every year, in each individual state, an event happens that gathers 1100 adolescent boys to participate in tradition called Boys State. The American Legion sponsored program shows these inspired young men the ins and outs of politics through the course of a strenuous seven days, where they must form a mock government. By the end, the Legion hopes that the young men will be made aware of the politics, democracy, and effort it takes to running a successful campaign. Famous political figures such as Dick Cheney, Corey Booker, Bill Clinton, Rush Limbaugh, and many others, have participated in this event. Directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBride guide us through a world that includes all the juicy aspects of politics: unity, idealism, hope, and backstabbing. Is this peek into the 85 year old institution worth the ride?

Review- The Death of Stalin (2017)

by Old King Clancy

With The Thick Of It and it’s cinematic partner, In The Loop, covering UK politics, and Veep covering the US, it can be argued that nobody has a better, or funnier, grasp on the ineptitude of politicians than Armando Iannucci. Now with his latest film, The Death Of Stalin, Iannucci tackles historical Russian politics to show that no matter where or when, politicians were and are idiots!

Loosely based on the true story of the Russian governments reaction to the death of Joseph Stalin (Adrian McLoughlin), the film finds the Russian cabinet – Deputy General Secretary Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), First Secretary Nikita Kruschev (Steve Buschemi), head of secret police Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale) and Deputy Premier Vyacheslav Molotov (Michael Palin) – coming together to help guide the country through a period of mourning. Nikita sees the opportunity to ease up on Stalin’s torturous rule and induct a more liberal approach to the Russian Government, however, Beria starts mobilizing his Police Force to manipulate Malenkov into giving him more power, and seizing the chair for himself.

Classic Review – Election (1999)

by Kevin Muller

This isn’t a review, but a look at why this specific film is one of my favorite of all time.  Want an extremely short review?  “Election” is a masterpiece in film making that has beautifully subtle direction, a flawless script, incredible performances, and is funny as hell.

Here, I am going to talk about why this movie can be used as a metaphor for most elections that happen every four years in this country.  The film maybe about a high school election but many of the antics can be applied to the event that defines our Democracy.   Please enjoy….
