Review – Valley Girl (2020)

Jessica Rothe has stated in many interviews that singing in the 2016 film La La Land was a thrill.  Before that film, the actress, who is theater trained, was only known for her acting ability, including the one that put her on the map, 2017’s Happy Death Day.  In La La Land, she was one of Emma Stone’ roommates who urged her to join them in a night out on the town, through the song “Somewhere in the Crowd.” This, along with her rising popularity, was enough for producers to get behind the idea of providing her with a starring role in a musical. Enter Valley Girl, a remake of the popular 80’s film that starred a fresh faced Nic Cage. However, in this one, it is a musical that the characters sing popular renditions of famous 80’s tunes. This would be a perfect opportunity for the actress to showcase her talents. Does this one sing like a bird or plummet to the ground?
