Review – Valley Girl (2020)

by Kevin Muller

Jessica Rothe has stated in many interviews that singing in the 2016 film La La Land was a thrill.  Before that film, the actress, who is theater trained, was only known for her acting ability, including the one that put her on the map, 2017’s Happy Death Day.  In La La Land, she was one of Emma Stone’ roommates who urged her to join them in a night out on the town, through the song “Somewhere in the Crowd.” This, along with her rising popularity, was enough for producers to get behind the idea of providing her with a starring role in a musical. Enter Valley Girl, a remake of the popular 80’s film that starred a fresh faced Nic Cage. However, in this one, it is a musical that the characters sing popular renditions of famous 80’s tunes. This would be a perfect opportunity for the actress to showcase her talents. Does this one sing like a bird or plummet to the ground?

Review – First Man (2018)

by Kevin Muller

From the halls of renowned musical school to the hills of Hollywood, Academy Award winning director, Damien Chazelle, who still is the youngest director to win the award, has a love affair with ambition and what it takes to be the best. Andrew, from Whiplash, and Mia and Sebastian, from La La Land, sacrificed their wants and needs in order to attain their dreams. This time, the stakes are a bit higher. This life or death mission to space shows the many lives lost from countless failures to one of America’s proudest moments. Does Chazelle pull it off?

What more can you say about “La La Land” that already hasn’t been said?  They say it is a masterpiece of a movie that is about ambition, dreams, and hope, all set against original music and beautiful dancing.  They say Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have one of a kind chemistry and are also individually incredible.  Yes, a lot has been said about this film and most of it is true.

The underwhelming summer movie season has come to pass.   For us movie fans, Fall is just as an exciting time for us as summer, maybe more.   This is the time where all the films are striving for the big one…Mr. Oscar.    Some of them will come off as pretentious dribble or fall short of greatness while others will move us and make us happy we love cinema so much.
