Screamfest 2017: An Interview with Rachel Belofsy

by Logan Myerz
What does it take to be an artist? Is it the passion you put into your craft or is it the countless hours perfecting your craft? These are questions I ask myself everyday by researching, writing, reviewing, and creating videos on the Cinephellas website. Being a film-maker isn’t as easy as it looks and getting the film showcased in the industry isn’t an overnight process. The horror film genre is one that is easily overlooked for its creativity, chilling story-line, and jump scares. The Academy has not taken too kindly to the horror genre and it seems many great films are snubbed come Oscar Season. But does it really matter? With many film festivals today, there are movies awarded for the Best Feature, Directing, Cinematography, as they should be for the distinguished film-making skills. What I appreciate about this genre of film making is the blood, sweat, and tears put into every shot of the movie. More importantly, it’s not about making money or the fame, rather it’s about the art-form and making a piece that is memorable.

Beyond Fest, the highest-attended genre film festival in the US, is excited to announce its full slate of 2017 programming featuring 32 events and 23 West Coast premieres of cinematic excess. Co-presented by Shudder, Beyond Fest returns to Hollywood’s famed Egyptian Theatre for 12 days of movies, music and mayhem spanning Friday, September 29th – Tuesday, October 10th to generate funds for the nonprofit 501c3 American Cinematheque.
With a diverse slate that includes films from all corners of the globe Beyond Fest is proud to open with BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 with director S.Craig Zahler returning with Vince Vaughn and Udo Kier in person, while closing night honors are bestowed upon Yorgos Lanthimos’ ferociously-twisted follow-up to THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. Other hotly-anticipated titles making their debuts include the World Premiere of Justin MacGregor’s BEST F(R)IENDS with Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero reunited and in person, Joe Lynch’s blissfully violent MAYHEM, and, courtesy of Amazon Prime Video, a very special theatrical premiere of JEAN-CLAUDE VAN JOHNSON with the Muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme, in person with the show’s cast and creators.

A Fluffy Night Out:
The West Hollywood Screening of Salt and Fire

At the end of my interview with Veronica Ferres a few weeks ago, she invited me to the London West Hollywood hotel off of West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip for a screening of Salt and Fire. Instead of writing a review of the event, I wanted to reproduce it. This episode of the Cinephellas podcast is the story my experience and the personal journey it necessitated. I’m forced to confront questions of identity, recognizing the space between the way I see myself and how I’m seen (or unseen) within the Hollywood machine. While those neuroses are being sorted out, I try to pay attention to a David O. Russell-moderated Q & A with Veronica and writer/director of Salt and Fire, Werner Herzog. But the most trying part of the evening is figuring out why Mr. Herzog is as fluffy as llama fur.
