Review – Zootopia (2016)

Looking Back at ZOOTOPIA

by Nile Fortner

Disney has 80 years of experience making animated films, so saying that Disney has made another family film is not anything noteworthy. It is what we have come to expect. While best known for their musicals, princesses, and prince charming, Disney animation has been on a roll as of late with animated movies with a message. For instance, the Academy Award-winning Big Hero 6 and Wreck-It Ralph. However, Zootopia is not simply another fun Disney animated movie, it is one of the greatest Disney animated movies I have seen in the last ten years.

Review – Hostiles (2017)

By Henry Hill

Sometimes when you haven’t seen an actor or actress in a film for a few years, they slip into the back of your mind, and it isn’t until you see the trailer for their next movie that you are reminded just how great they are at their craft. That was the case when I saw the trailer for Hostiles with Christian Bale starring. Ten years ago, Bale and Russell Crowe were in a terrific remake of the 1957 western, 3:10 to Yuma. The trailer for Hostiles hinted that we were in for another great western with Bale, and after seeing the film, I can say that it is a great western.

Review – Phantom Thread (2017)

by Kevin Muller

“…When I was a boy, I used to hide things in the linings of the garments.  Things I only knew that were there…..secrets.”

Reynolds Woodcock utters that line to his lover Alma. It is a simple one that both describes his secretive way of life and the tone of this film. Many people have dismissed this thing for its appeared smugness and esoteric nature. Oh, it is also a story about a dressmaker in the 1950’s too! Who wants to watch that? Those qualities are just what is on the surface of Paul Thomas Anderson’s incredible new film that reunites him with his There Will Be Blood actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, who has said this will be his curtain call from the cinematic world. For film lovers, that is enough reason to both get our asses in the seats, and sit through a movie about a dressmaker.

Review – Star Wars : The Last Jedi (2017)

by Old King Clancy

At the time of writing it’s been a day since I walked out of The Last Jedi and the on-line reaction to it has been surprisingly diverse with a lot of people either disappointed in the film or downright hating it. Which made no sense to me because I downright loved the film, and classed it as the best the franchise has been since Empire. Having had the time to think things through and read the negative reviews I think I understand to a certain degree, after The Force Awakens was criticized for basically being A Newer Hope, The Last Jedi does all it can to take some of the boldest steps ever taken in a Star Wars film and actively doesn’t try to please everyone. It is completely unexpected from a company like Disney, but they just might have made one of the bravest Star Wars films to date, and I’m definitely on board with it all.

Review – Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

by Kevin Muller

Before comic book films became the craze, the holiday season was reserved for films that had big casts, a large budget, and usually an adaptation of a famous novel. Who doesn’t want to see their favorite stars all together on screen acting with one another?  Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted many times as both a film and a TV production. This time, Shakespearean lover, and the man who brought the mighty Thor to the silver screen, Kenneth Branagh, takes a shot at the famous Agatha Christie murder mystery.

’31 Days of Horror’ Review – Maniac (2012)

Frodo’s Gone Homicidal in ‘MANIAC’

by Nile Fortner

A socially awkward serial killer (Elijah Wood) removes the scalps’ of women and attaches them to his mannequins, to bring a new life to them.

A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last House on the Left, The Amityville Horror, Cabin Fever, and The Wicker Man are all classic horror films. On the other hand, I believe these classic horror films have not been remade into classic remakes. Many remakes fail to capture the energy, wisdom, and likeness of the original. It is very difficult to capture lightning in a bottle twice, especially with horror movies. Many directors, producers, and writers of horror all tend to follow the same format, and end up being predictable, bland, and lifeless nowadays. However, director Franck Khalfoun (‘P2’ and ‘High Tension’) brings some new life into a cult classic, a new direction, and in my opinion a better film. I believe that Maniac (2012) is a rare exception of the remake actually being better than the original.

Review – Mother! (2017)

by Kevin Muller

Forget everything you have seen or heard about this film. Don’t seek out any spoilers or explanations about the film either. This is probably the most controversial studio film to be released in an extremely long time. People always complain that there is no originality in Hollywood anymore, well, it is time to put up or shut up. You may not like this one, but you can’t say it is like anything you’ve seen before. Even as a movie critic, it is an extremely hard one to review without giving it all away.

Review – The Layover, Girl’s Trip, and Rough Night!

The Good, Bad, and the Ugly: “The Layover,” “Girl’s Trip,” and “Rough Night” Review

by Kevin Muller

These three movies take the typical comedic situations involving girl trips and creates three very different stories. They all try to make us laugh, with some resorting to the gross out humor more than the others, but only one really succeeds because it abides by the rules of good film-making.
