Steve McQueen’s Widows is a very entertaining time as it feels like a throwback to the older dramas that used to be a big deal before superhero movies and franchises were a thing. If you want to see great actors doing their thing while a great director does his best job at being artful while being contained in a mainstream bubble, then this is the movie for you. A lot of the ads made this look like a big action-packed heist movie and just know that it’s not that. If you’ve seen any of McQueen’s other movies, you know what to expect from him here. It’s more of a slow burn character study about how three women are forced to break out of their shells created by their now deceased husbands through their crimes by way of financial stability. While that might seem heavy, it’s engrossing from beginning to end thanks to great performances and McQueen’s directing.
Given Steve McQueen’s (no not that one) previous works being far more dramatic affairs touching on protests, sex addiction, and slavery, having him helm a heist movie sounds strange on paper. Even more so when you realize the heist film is an adaptation of a British TV Series from the 80’s and co-written by Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn. But as fans of both Flynn and McQueen’s works and a solid cast backing them up, Widows looked to be a thrilling change of pace.
What we got was a thrilling change of pace, but still carrying McQueen’s dramatic flair.

Donald Glover a.k.a Childish Gambino has been blowing up bigger than ever in the mainstream with his “This is America” music video and with his take on the iconic Star Wars character Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story, a role that was originally played by Billy Dee Williams. Donald Glover also gave us a new season of the hit FX show Atlanta. Much like Glover, the cast of Atlanta has been blowing up as well, with Zazie Beetz as Domino in the recent film Deadpool 2 and Get Out star Lakeith Stanfield most recently in the new film, Sorry to Bother You.

The Worst Films of 2017
10. Suburbicon
George Clooney took a shot at directing a film that was scripted by the Coen Brothers. Unfortunately, the groundwork laid by the brothers wasn’t strong enough for Clooney to make a good film. It is spectacular failure. The first half of the film leads us through an interesting story that drops the ball in the second half. Clooney decided to combine an unproduced script, a crime film, and the true story of a black family living in a white suburb, into one movie. The problem is that both scripts have totally different tones and themes that could’ve worked if they had their own movie, but by mashing them together, it created a narrative mess that you can’t pinpoint where it starts and ends.

Most people get excited for the beginning of the year due to the proximity of the Superbowl to the New Year. For me, I also get the Academy Awards, which is the Superbowl for film fans. Though the Patriots, and Brady, losing to a team who never won and that no one believed in, was maybe the greatest narratives of the year. Let’s see who is nominated in each of these major categories, along with my personal picks, and who I think will take an Oscar home.
2017 was a fantastic year for movies. Like most years, the Academy left out many Oscar worthy contenders. For example, I personally thought The Florida Project was snubbed for a Best Picture nomination, along with a few other categories. Brigsby Bear, A Ghost Story, Good Time, Killing of a Sacred Deer, and It are few others to name that were completely robbed. Continue reading
