Review – The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil (2019) : Fantasia International Film Festival!
My second movie on Day 3 of the Fantasia International Film Festival was the Quebec Premiere of the South Korean crime thriller “Akinjeon” (literally “Villain Story”) aka The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil. The film opened in South Korean theaters on May 15th and was screened out of competition in the Midnight Screenings section at Cannes on May 22nd. It then played in a handful of US theaters in June.

Review – Brightburn (2019)
Brightburn tries to present something that surprisingly hasn’t become a movie in this superhero-obsessed culture we now live in. What if Superman was evil? There’s a lot to do with this premise as villains are usually more interesting than the heroes in terms of their backstory and motivations. The movie follows Brandon Breyer, a seemingly perfectly behaved young boy who deals with new feelings and emotions when he turns 12 after he develops superpowers out of nowhere. Things get tense in the town as Brandon begins to cause trouble by attacking other people with his powers.

Review – Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

It has been quite a journey for Godzilla. Five years ago, the big green guy got his redemption when Godzilla was released. It had been 16 years since the awful 1998 version, where the “king of all monsters” looked like a discount T-Rex, hit screens and ultimately disappointed both fans and audiences. While the 2014 version wasn’t perfect, it had improved on the look and nature of its title character. What audiences did not care for was the soap opera level acting and drama of its main characters. The total amount of monster time was far too little for many film goers. The studio listened and increased the amount of monster goodness this time around. Does the change improve or hurt the sequel?
Review – Captain Marvel (2019)
Captain Marvel is the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the unforgettable events that occurred in Avengers: Infinity War. Since Infinity War left things in a way that made the audience curious about what would happen next, it was interesting to see what they come up with. All things considered, the next movie had to be something notable and memorable to leave the audience wanting more. Being that Captain Marvel was their first solo female superhero movie, I wanted to see what they could do with this material, and see if this would satisfying my appetite until Endgame came out. DC did a good job in creating an entertaining movie with Wonder Woman, which handled similar material of women who are able to be fighters in their own world and struggling to find their place and humanity in ours. While it’s admirable that Marvel finally put a female superhero at the forefront in one of their movies, this is still a “by the numbers” origin story that you’ve seen time and time again. Still, it’s watchable and it will be pleasing for those just wanting a movie that just cuts to the chase to provide a mostly standalone Sci-Fi action adventure movie. Marvel competently made a movie that seemed to hit the mark for a lot of people and that’s cool. It will be most agreeable for those who are either the most casual Marvel fans or the diehards who always rewatch all the movies leading up to their latest chapter.

It’s unrelentingly violent, but stylish, and has a simple story that’s set in a vast and detailed world. Most of all, it has an energetic spirit led by its leading man, Keanu Reeves.
