1. Marry Me – 2.5 out of 5 – Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson star in this perfectly harmless and very predictable romantic comedy. The ridiculous premise is elevated by the two stars, who have a sweet natured chemistry, but not a fully satisfying one that could’ve made this stand out.
Blacklight – 1.5 out of 5 – One of the two Liam Neeson films that dropped in 2022. The intriguing political thriller this starts out being is quickly diminished by a film that becomes a bore to watch. There isn’t that much action in this one, but instead a story of a man who is slowly losing both his remaining family and mind. It all looks good on paper but nothing is done with this premise.
Memory – 2.5 out of 5 – Martin Campbell, the director of Golden Eye and Casino Royale, who directed the second Neeson film with much better results. Again, the character has memory loss and it feels like a way to add depth to his story. There is action here, with Neeson’s character taking on child predators, but it feels like something you never would never came from Campbell. Enjoyable, but forgettable.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris – 3.5 out of 5 – Leslie Manville stars as a widow whose life is changed when she has a chance to go to Paris to obtain her very own Christian Dior dress. If you are still with me, it is a story about the positiveness of one woman can do good in the world. The sets, costume design, and recreation of the time period, are all ace, but is Manville who will steal your heart.
DC League of Super-Pets – 3 out of 5 – Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart bring their buddy chemistry to the animated world with this take on the superhero genre. Here, Johnson plays Superman’s best friend, Krypto, who must both save his owner and deal with the change life brings. It is a charming kids movie that has plenty of Easter eggs for those comic book adult viewers. What really shines here are the supporting cast who voice the pets and the popular DC slate of heroes.
See How They Run – 2.5 out of 5 – Saorsise Ronan and Sam Rockwell headline this murder mystery film that is supposed to be a parody of the genre. While the acting is good, from both them and some familiar faces, the direction is quite mundane, and the killer reveal is extremely uninspiring.
Amsterdam – 2 out of 5 – David O. Russell’s giant ensemble can’t save this messy film about the dirtiness of politics and the underbelly of America. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington are all good, but the story, script, and direction are all over the place. Worst of all, it isn’t engaging at all. One of the biggest, and most expensive, misfires of 2022.
