Review – Da 5 Bloods (2020)

For almost 40 years, Spike Lee has made some of the most memorable films to come out of Hollywood. His works are full of black pride, black history, and the overall nature of the black experience. With that being said, it took him 35 years to finally get an Oscar nomination. That one was for the incredible 2018 film, Blackkklansman which featured amazing performances by Adam Driver and John David Washington, son of Denzel, who has every bit of his father’s swagger and gift for performance. In the recent years, directors are flocking towards Netflix, because as we saw with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Alfonso Cauron’s Roma, both my picks for best picture in their respective years, the studio lets the artist do their thing with little to no involvement. It’s now Spike’s turn, so how did he do?

What Will Win: 1917

While the people will be pulling for Avengers: Endgame, I feel that the sheer mastery of direction, and visual trickery, of Sam Mendes World War 1 film, will take it all.  It’s a masterpiece of filmmaking that pushed the extremes of the singular shot technique.

Review – Richard Jewell (2019)

We are in a point in history where people are at odds with the news media. While some people swear by CNN/MSNBC, others think that FOX News are the ones who tell the truth. Even our own President has weighed in by creating a catchphrase to describe his feelings about the news organizations. Back in 1996, an event happened that threw a good man through the ringer, and even though he came out clean, it changed his life until his death in 2007. It was a story of a misunderstood hero who was wrongly accused by the press and FBI. Hollywood legend, Clint Eastwood, has decided to bring this story to the big screen.  Is it more like wonderful American Sniper or the mundane The 15:17 to Paris?
