Review – Hostiles (2017)

Sometimes when you haven’t seen an actor or actress in a film for a few years, they slip into the back of your mind, and it isn’t until you see the trailer for their next movie that you are reminded just how great they are at their craft. That was the case when I saw the trailer for Hostiles with Christian Bale starring. Ten years ago, Bale and Russell Crowe were in a terrific remake of the 1957 western, 3:10 to Yuma. The trailer for Hostiles hinted that we were in for another great western with Bale, and after seeing the film, I can say that it is a great western.

What does it mean to be an activist? On the basest level, it means promoting social change by raising awareness about an issue or idea. Activism is often depicted in historical narratives through larger-than-life figures and mass movements. But the greatest activism takes place when ordinary individuals work to connect with others on a one-on-one level. From those small gestures, hope transforms into promise for everyone. Director Matthew Cooke (How to Make Money Selling Drugs) and I discussed this interpersonal activist approach as it appears in his latest documentary project, Survivors Guide to Prison (2018).

The Lullaby – Interview with Reine Swart

The Lullaby is a 2018 South African horror film directed by Darrell Roodt and written by Tarryn-Tanile. The film centers on a 19-year-old mother named Chloe Heerden, who returns to her hometown, Eden Rock, and tries to embrace the terms of being a mother. Even though Chloe has support from her mother, Ruby, Chloe has the willies and has a difficult time grasping the idea of being a mother.

THE CURED – Premiere & After Party February 20th

IFC Films celebrated the Los Angeles Premiere of THE CURED on Tuesday, February 20th at AMC Sunset 5. The After Party was hosted at sbe’s Hyde Sunset in West Hollywood. Guests enjoyed specialty vodka cocktails by House of Carbonadi and cold brews by Peroni beer.  Music provided by DJ Lindsay Luv.

IFC Films will release THE CURED in Theaters and VOD on February 23rd.

Review – Black Panther (2018)

The arrival of T’Challa in Civil War was a welcome addition to the MCU and his arc provided the film with a neutral viewpoint away from the already established Captain America and Iron Man. Now with Infinity War looming, the prince of Wakanda has been given his own film to help establish himself and Wakanda into the MCU. The result is one of Marvel’s best, and possibly their most politically important movie to date.
