Review – Patriot Season 1 & 2

by Armando Vanegas

Amazon has a streaming service called Prime Video or Amazon Prime Video or Amazon Prime or whatever they’re calling it now. I don’t know if you know that. How else would you know that? Unless you read your monthly bank statement that says they took money from you if you ever bought a subscription to them. On the one hand, Amazon is wonderful for purchasing products of all kinds. On the other, they really gotta do some work in promoting their streaming service because it has some great content. It was just blind luck that I came across Patriot, a brilliantly surreal and hilarious spy comedy from Steven Conrad, the writer of the Will Smith drama The Pursuit of Happyness (probably the furthest removed from his style), the similarly surreal Nicolas Cage dramedy The Weather Man, and the just as surreal John C. Reilly/Seann William Scott buddy dramedy, The Promotion. Even though I liked those aforementioned movies, I didn’t know what to expect as the trailer didn’t exactly grab me. Neither did the trailers for their other shows. I just wanted to try some Amazon programming and this was the one that seemed relatively interesting to me. What the show accomplishes by the end should make it a must see for people wanting something weirder and more out there in their TV choices.

Top 10 Worst/Best Films of 2018!

Worst of 2018

10.  Forever My Girl

Jessica Rothe is one of the more interesting talents that have come out of Hollywood in the last few years. From Happy Death Day, to her brief stint in La La Land, she is an actress who just has it. Even she couldn’t save this mess of a love story about a selfish musician, who left his pregnant wife at the altar and turned his back on his home town, to chase a life of music, booze, and women. We are presented with so much reason to hate this guy, especially what he did to Rothe’s Josie, but we all know they will end up together. The problem is that she welcomes him back with little to no fight. He uses his fame, charm, and winning looks to melt her into a pool of emotion. Come on, Josie! Put up a better fight than that! Not only for yourself, but for us, the audience, so that this film has some type of real conflict.

Cinephellas Podcast – Episode 28 (Interview with Mark Steven Johnson)

by Logan Myerz

On this episode of the Cinephellas Podcast, I interviewed Mark Steven Johnson, the director of the new heist film, Finding Steve McQueen. Mark is no stranger to the entertainment industry and entered the Hollywood scene in the early 90’s. He has penned such great films as Grumpy Old Men, Simon Birch, and Christopher Robin. But today, I wanted to find out the directing process behind Finding Steve McQueen, working on a film that is based on a true story, working with Travis Fimmel, and his upcoming projects.

Review – Captain Marvel (2019)

by Kevin Muller

There is a destructive force coming to the MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it has to power to destroy everything in its path. No, I’m not talking about Thanos, but the star of this film, Brie Larson. For those of you who don’t know, Larson hasn’t been the easiest person to deal with during the filming and promotion of this film. As the lead in a MCU film, she is using it as a platform to deal with women’s rights and other injustices she wants to talk about. Her foot has already been in her mouth a few times, including her saying that the new super hero film wasn’t made for white men, who are the majority of the critic reviewing population. On top of that, she apparently isn’t meshing well with the other Avengers, which could cause a problem. See, most of these original heroes will start to fade out, with the new ones, like Captain Marvel, stepping up to take the lead for the coming years. It doesn’t look good when your main star has created such controversy before the movie was released. Outside of the controversy, the main reason people want to see this is to get information about the person who will fix what Thanos did at the end of Infinity War.   At the end of that film, Nick Fury was seen contacting her, before disintegrating into nothing, along with half of the world’s population. So, how is this origin story that tells us about the savior to this epic saga?
