Review – Beware the Slenderman

So I’m going to get into this review right here. A review of the HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman. Now if you’re like me asking yourself, “Slenderman? Who the hell is Slenderman?” Honestly, I never heard of Slenderman until the two 12-year-old girls murdered their friend as a sacrifice to Slenderman. I remember when someone first told me about Slenderman, and I honestly thought it was a new rapper or trap dance hitting the music scene. Really, I thought someone named Slenderman was dropping an album next week.  I’ve always been a fan of HBO documentaries. Spike Lee’s 4 Little Girls is one of my all time favorite HBO documentaries, and just one of my favorite documentaries in general. However, lately it seems like HBO is creating some damn fine documentaries. HBO’s Beware the Slenderman is about how an urban myth played a role in two girls murdering one of their classmates, one of their friends, and it looks like HBO has delivered another damn fine documentary.

            The news horrified the world: Two 12-year-old American girls lured a friend into the Wisconsin woods and stabbed her 19 times in an effort to appease a faceless mythical entity known online as Slenderman. But there’s more to the story than the dark headlines it generated.

Delving deep into this shocking crime, the sobering documentary BEWARE THE SLENDERMAN examines how an urban myth could take root in impressionable young minds, leading to an unspeakable act, when it debuts MONDAY, JAN. 23 (10:00 p.m.-midnight ET/PT) on HBO.

The documentary will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and affiliate portals.

Directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky (HBO’s Oscar®-nominated “The Final Inch”), BEWARE THE SLENDERMAN covers all sides of this unusual ongoing case, drawing on an eerie array of Slenderman-inspired art, games and self-produced video, all culled from the Internet, along with heart-wrenching, unprecedented access to the two girls’ families, courtroom testimony and interrogation-room footage.

On May 31, 2014, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a 911 call reported a chilling crime. A girl had been stabbed and was found by the side of the road near the woods. The national news media quickly picked up on the story: Victim Payton (“Bella”) Leutner had been brutally stabbed and left for dead. The suspects were her friends Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier. All three were 12 years old.

In separate interrogation rooms, Morgan and Anissa both explained to detectives that they were compelled to kill their friend in order to become proxies of Slenderman, a fictional Internet character they believed was real.

Bella recovered from her injuries, and Morgan and Anissa were charged with attempted first-degree murder. By Wisconsin law, they would be tried as adults, though their lawyers appealed to have the case moved to juvenile court. While the girls awaited the judge’s ruling in a juvenile detention center, their baffled parents struggled to understand what happened.

Morgan and Anissa discovered Slenderman on the Internet and came to believe he would hurt their families unless they killed Bella to appease him. Usually depicted as a tall man in a black suit with a featureless white face, Slenderman first appeared on the Internet as part of a 2009 Photoshop contest, lurking behind children in two black-and-white photos. Seen as both a malevolent figure and a guardian angel, Slenderman soon spread to all platforms of the Internet, spawning fan fiction, artwork, games and videos around the world.

Eventually, conspiracy theories about the origins of Slenderman multiplied, and he became a viral meme, with a historic mythology. His character tapped into universal fears, with roots going back to stories by The Brothers Grimm and legends like The Pied Piper of Hamelin.

Anissa and Morgan were particularly susceptible to believing in Slenderman, in part because of their isolation. Anissa’s teacher, Tom Haynes, says she was a social outlier who often cried because she didn’t have friends. Without a peer group of other girls, the pair became more and more obsessed.

Critically, experts testified during a hearing that Anissa has characteristics of a delusional disorder (the inability to distinguish real from not real). This diminished ability can be found in many people to varying degrees. Psychologist Dr. Michael Caldwell, Psy.D. states, “Adults may have simply eccentric religious or spiritual beliefs or conspiratorial beliefs or things like that, and live out their life with no problems at all.”

Additionally, psychiatrists diagnosed Morgan with early childhood schizophrenia, a mental illness also afflicting Morgan’s father. Morgan’s mother comments that she knew one of their children might also develop schizophrenia, and admits there were signs with Morgan. Yet she never imagined something like this could happen.

A year later, citing the premeditated nature of the crime, the judge ruled the girls were to be tried as adults. Having spent more than two years incarcerated and with their trial date still pending, Morgan and Anissa’s saga has now become part of the Slenderman Internet myth.

BEWARE THE SLENDERMAN features interviews with experts who help put the girls’ mental state and the Slenderman myth in context, including: digital folklorist Trevor J. Blank, Ph.D.; Brad Kim, editor-in-chief, KnowYourMeme.com; evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, Ph.D.; literary critic Jack Zipes, Ph.D.; neurodevelopmental psychologist Abigail Baird, Ph.D.; and psychologist Jacqueline Woolley, Ph.D.

Ultimately, the film reveals how adolescent isolation, mental health issues and the nebulous reality of the Internet created a chilling mandate for two young girls, with life-altering consequences.

Review – Westworld

“These violent delights have violent ends.”

HBO has generally been a solid channel for quality programming, so when the news came that they were remaking Michael Crichton’s original theme park disaster movie Westworld into a TV series, the news was welcome. The original Westworld had strong concepts but lacked the maturity and technical advancement to pull it off correctly, it was exactly the type of film that was meant to be remade and with A.I. becoming closer and closer to reality, the timing of the series – as well as some help from an unbelievable cast and backing from J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan – ensured it to be a sure-fire hit. And you know what, it damn well was.

Review – Westworld, Episode 3

“Dear, dear. How queer everything is today, and yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night?”

Westworld’s third episode, titled The Stray, is the weakest so far but only in terms of being the most exposition heavy so far. With all we’ve come to learn about the Park and its inhabitants, allowing a slower episode to focus our attentions seems the most logical choice to make now that we’ve all become fully invested in the story to come.

Review – Westworld (Episode 2)

After introducing the world and the main players of its story in the pilot episode, Westworld’s starts settling into the larger narratives with episode two, entitled Chestnut. As well as introducing new characters and expanding on some of the smaller roles from the previous episode, we’re given a look into a possible future for the future and enough to chew over with as many theories and ideas as we can manage.

“Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.”

The 1973 movie Westworld was written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton and showcased a Western themed amusement park where human visitors were able to interact with android inhabitants and live an Old West lifestyle without fear or consequence. It was a novel idea that nowadays is more famous for its similarities to Crichton’s most familiar work, Jurassic Park, but the idea of artificial intelligence gone rogue has stuck around cinema for decades and shaped science fiction  into what it is today.

The one-hour drama series WESTWORLD kicks off its ten-episode season SUNDAY, OCT. 2 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan (“Interstellar,” “The Dark Knight,” “Person of Interest”) & Lisa Joy (“Pushing Daisies,” “Burn Notice”), both of whom are executive producing and writing, with Nolan directing, the series is based on the 1973 film “Westworld,” written by Michael Crichton.

Teddy Flood (James Marsden), a new arrival to a small frontier town, quickly proves both his charm and talent with a revolver. Beautiful, razor-sharp madam Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) has a genius for reading people and a knack for survival, but her seen-it-all-before worldview is about to be challenged. Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) is the brilliant and quixotic head of the park’s Programming Division, whose keen observation of human nature provides him with boundless inspiration for his life’s work: creating artificial people.

Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) is a mysterious and savvy provocateur with a unique perspective on Westworld. Theresa Cullen (Sidse Babett Knudsen), Westworld’s head of Quality Assurance, is responsible for keeping the park from sliding into unscripted chaos. A first-time visitor, William (Jimmi Simpson) is initially wary of the park’s more lascivious attractions, but slowly uncovers a deeper meaning.

Hector Escaton (Rodrigo Santoro), Westworld’s perennial “most wanted” bandit, subscribes to the theory that the West is a wild place, and the only way to survive is to embrace the role of predator. Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward), a sardonic rising star in the Behavior Department, is charged with diagnosing the odd quirks of behavior in the park’s hosts. Armistice (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) is a savage fighter and brutal bandit, whose ruthlessness is surpassed only by her abiding loyalty to her fellow outlaws.

Logan (Ben Barnes) is a veteran guest whose hedonistic romp through the park is equally motivated by self-indulgence and a desire to help his friend, William. Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) is the head of Narrative, whose storylines tantalize the guests, while his temperament grates on his colleagues. Clementine Pennyfeather (Angela Sarafyan), one of Westworld’s most popular attractions, is perfectly beguiling, by design.

Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) is the no-nonsense head of Security, charged with monitoring host and human interactions and ensuring the safety of the guests. Lawrence (Clifton Collins, Jr.), a charming but lethal outlaw, has a knack for maneuvering and negotiating the various criminal elements of Westworld.

HBO’s New Comedy Series to Begin Production Later This Year

The anthology comedy series ROOM 104, from brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, will begin production in Los Angeles later this year for 2017 debut on HBO, it was announced today by Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. Set in a single room of an average American hotel, ROOM 104 tells a different story of the assorted characters who pass through it in each episode.

“Jay and Mark Duplass are two of the most inventive talents in TV today,” noted Bloys. “We’re excited to see what they do with this unique concept.”

“We’ve all seen stories set in seedy motels and high-class international resorts, but for years we’ve been fascinated by the funny, weird, sad, scary, absurd things going down in that corporate chain hotel near the airport. That’s what ROOM 104 is after… finding some magic in the seemingly mundane,” added Jay and Mark Duplass.

Filmmaking brothers Jay and Mark Duplass (along with Steve Zissis) were creators of the HBO comedy series “Togetherness,” which completed its second season earlier this year. They are also executive producers of HBO’s adult animated comedy series “Animals,” which returns for its second season in 2017.

Jay and Mark Duplass have written, directed and/or produced more than 20 films, including “Cyrus,” “Jeff, Who Lives at Home,” “Baghead” and their 2005 Sundance Film Festival breakout hit, “The Puffy Chair.” Other films produced by the Duplass Brothers include the Independent Spirit Award-winning “Safety Not Guaranteed” and “Tangerine,” and the upcoming romantic drama “Blue Jay,” which will have its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.

ROOM 104 will be executive produced by Jay & Mark Duplass, who are also showrunners; executive producer, Xan Aranda; producer, Sydney Fleischmann.

Game of Thrones Updates

The Emmy®– and Golden Globe-winning series GAME OF THRONES will begin shooting its next season later this summer, it was announced today by Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. Production of the seven-episode seventh season will be based in Northern Ireland, while additional portions will be filmed in Spain and Iceland, with debut slated for summer 2017 on HBO.

“Now that winter has arrived on GAME OF THRONES, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” said Bloys. “Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”

Season seven directors will include Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor.

Locations for shooting in Spain will include Sevilla, Caceres, Almodovar del Rio, Santiponce, Zumaia and Bermeo.

Last week, GAME OF THRONES received 23 Primetime Emmy® nominations, the most of any nominee for the third year in a row. This year’s nominations include Outstanding Drama Series, 2 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington), 3 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Max von Sydow), 2 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Miguel Sapochnik, Jack Bender) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss).

Review – Game of Thrones, Season 6

Entering its sixth season, Game Of Thrones reached a point that excited and frightened fans in equal measure, while the fifth season had introduced original elements – such as Tyrion meeting Dany – season six would be the first to actively go passed the books and bring in new material, some of which would be unique to the show but some of it spoiling elements that Martin had not yet written.
