Divorce returned earlier this summer for a third season on HBO, which is great. The bad news is that it’s the last season and also has a very short amount of episodes. No matter the quantity, it remains an effectively bittersweet slice of life comedy about how two people try to maintain an amicable relationship during divorce and it stays that way until the end. I can already tell you’re at the edge of your seat. Understandably, it’s not as exciting as white walkers and dragons, but it’s interesting in its own way. Considering how quick the announcement came just before the season premiered could mean it was taken out just before it reached its logical endpoint. Having seen it, this is a pretty nice way for the series to leave on as it still maintains the same high quality humor and drama that it’s brought us in such a short run.

Even though the movie Good Boys has some wacky, gross-out jokes, and 12-year-olds in outrageous situations, this film has a lot of heart, especially towards the end. The movie’s charm comes from the way producer Seth Rogen and debut-director Gene Stupnitsky showcase the innocence of kids. The comedy comes from that innocence of children talking about things in an adult perspective. This film follows a similar format of Superbad or more recently Booksmart.

My second film on Day 11 of the Fantasia International Film Festival was the Canadian Premiere of the Danish crime thriller Journal 64 aka The Purity of Vengeance. The film opened in Danish theaters in October 2018 and apparently became the highest-grossing Danish film ever during its run. It also played in many film festivals before landing in Montreal.

Momentum Pictures announced today that it has acquired North American rights to Blumhouse’s latest horror / thriller BLOODLINE from director Henry Jacobson (Election Day: Lens Across America). Jacobson co-wrote the screenplay with Avra Fox-Lerner (Nora) and Will Honley (The Hive), who also wrote the story. The film stars Seann William Scott (American Pie), Mariela Garriga (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), Dale Dickey (Iron Man 3) and Kevin Carroll (The Leftovers). BLOODLINE will be released in theaters, On Digital, and On Demand on September 20, 2019.
