Review – Extra Ordinary (2019): Fantasia International Film Festival!

My second film on Day 13 of the Fantasia International Film Festival was the Canadian Premiere of the supernatural comedy Extra Ordinary, a co-production between Ireland and Belgium. The film had its World Premiere at SXSW back in February. It then played at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in April where it won the Silver Raven in the International Competition section. It also played at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in early July and was awarded the H.R. Giger “Narcisse” Award for Best Film in the International Competition section and also received the Audience Award. It played in several other festivals before landing in Montreal.

Review – The Purity of Vengeance (2019): Fantasia International Film Festival!

My second film on Day 11 of the Fantasia International Film Festival was the Canadian Premiere of the Danish crime thriller Journal 64 aka The Purity of Vengeance. The film opened in Danish theaters in October 2018 and apparently became the highest-grossing Danish film ever during its run. It also played in many film festivals before landing in Montreal.

Review – Toy Story 4 & Aladdin (2019)

It may seem that Disney is becoming a juggernaut of the film industry by buying every single part of Hollywood, but they have always been the forerunner in family entertainment. In the 90’s, they were the King of the animation field with classics such as The Little Mermaid, Mulan, and Beauty and the Beast. The latter was the first animated film to be nominated for “Best Picture” when the nomination pool only allowed five films. There was also The Lion King, which will soon have a photo-realistic remake that will have its own review, instead of a shared one. Personally, Aladdin was always a favorite, mainly due to Robin Williams’s legendary turn as the lovable Genie. On top of that, the film also had catchy songs and overall fast and frantic attitude.   Unfortunately, shortly after that film delighted audiences, the downfall of hand drawn animation was about to begin with Disney teaming up with a new company called Pixar. We all know outcome of that merger, but it was 1995’s Toy Story that changed the game forever. Now, both these 90’s properties are back to see what they can do with better technology and an even wider audience.

Review – Booksmart (2019)

Olivia Wilde has been in the business for over ten years. As an actress, she’s juggled a career starring in both projects on television and film. On top of being strikingly beautiful, she carries herself with confidence, possessing both a razor sharp wit and deep intellect. Both her parents were respected journalists that rubbed elbows with many influential people during their careers. Wilde has spoken of many anecdotes, from her childhood, involving people from the political and entertainment world. She has been surrounded by respected people all her life. It is a lot to live up to and now she has challenged herself to be more than a pretty face. She has tried her hand at directing a coming of age story, with two female leads. How does she do with her first directorial debut?

Review – Booksmart (2019)

Going into Booksmart, I’d had the film on the edge of my radar, mostly due to it being the directorial debut of Olivia Wilde, the strong reviews and was being touted as the female Superbad. This was a description I later found out was more apt than I initially thought with one of the lead actresses being Jonah Hill’s sister – but had I not been given a free ticket to see the film early, I might have waited before checking this one out. Instead, I’m going to use this platform to tell people to go out there and see this film because it’s a hilarious, dirty, and an unclichéd look into female friendships and the life of a modern high-school student that deserves more than just being called the female Superbad.
