Review – The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

A Big Hit at the Superbowl but a Misfire for the Movie

by Nile Fortner

What made the first Cloverfield so fascinating was that they took something we’ve seen before like a giant monster in the city and they found a way to give it a new a new perspective. The 2008 Cloverfield film gave a new perspective that allowed audiences to see the death and the destruction of a monster in the city in the form of a found footage film. Even 2016’s surprise sequel and spin-off, 10 Cloverfield Lane, was a bold new take on a familiar story setup, and I actually loved this film, and would consider it an improvement over the first movie.

The trailer for The Cloverfield Paradox dropped at Superbowl 52 (Go Eagles). After the trailer was over, it said the movie was now showing on Netflix. After the Superbowl was over, I knew I was definitely going to check it out. I dusted the Dorito’s off my gut, almost spilled my beer, telling people at the Superbowl After-Party, “Move, I have to get home to see that new Cloverfield!”

Review – Justice League (2017)

by Nile Fortner

Ever since I was a child, I have been a fan of the DC characters. I have spent my life reading comics, watching the cartoons, collecting the figures and collectibles, going to conventions, seeing the movies, and I’m proud of all those things no matter how much society tells me I’m a geek.

As much as I love Marvel comics and movies, DC has a special place in my heart and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. In my opinion, Marvel has the better stories while DC has the better characters. Ever since the age of six, Superman and Batman have been my all time favorite comic book characters. Sometimes I even connect more to these characters than some actual people I’ve met in reality. I love these characters, and have loved seeing them come to the big and small screen.

This Summer Go Ape Sh!t For ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’!

by Nile Fortner

A few years ago, 20th Century Fox decided to do what a majority of movie production companies were doing and already invested in, dusting off old, famous properties, names, and recognition by doing prequels for the big-screen. I’ve always been a fan of ‘The Planet of the Apes’ films. Back in 2011, I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the prequel ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. Even more unexpectedly, the sequel to the prequel, ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, I absolutely loved, and consider it to be the best ‘Planet of the Apes’ film since the 1968 original classic. Now we have the third entry to the prequels, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, and is officially a trilogy. The best trilogy we have gotten in years!

Review – War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

by Old King Clancy

There should have never been a Planet Of The Apes reboot, a prequel series chronicling the events that led to the destruction of humanity and the rise of the apes. It was a ridiculous concept that should’ve never made it passed the conception, but it did make it. Through this whole trilogy, from Rise to Dawn to War, this franchise has proven itself one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies of the modern age. With War For The Planet Of The Apes, they end this series in the perfect way to create one of the most personal and morally complex blockbusters out there today.

Review – The Jungle Book (2016)

In these days, CGI, or computer generated imagery, is so common that we actually yearn and gravitate towards old school practical effects.   Spike Jonze adapted the famous children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are” using people in giant costumes to portray his monsters instead of fully rendering them with computer graphics and the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, definitely not “The Hobbit” movies, used as little CGI as possible.   Every so often, a movie comes along that pushes the bar further for what CGI is really capable of achieving.  Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” is that very movie.  It is a visual masterpiece and a great retelling of the famous Disney cartoon.
