Review – Dunkirk (2017)

Some movies are made with the sole purpose of being seen on the big screen. In the case of director Christopher Nolan, a majority of his films fall into this category. They are grand in scope and give the viewer the feeling as if they are pedestrians on a city street being towered over by skyscrapers. The cinematography of Nolan’s films always include wide shots showcasing the vastness of the particular setting they are taking place in and always have a very authentic feel to them, placing the viewer in the thick of the story, and making them feel like they are part of a large world. Dunkirk is no different; it was filmed using the large format IMAX cameras and it is a behemoth of a war movie complete with thunderous explosions, a heart-thumping soundtrack, and one of the most harrowing evacuations in history.
This Summer Go Ape Sh!t For ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’!

A few years ago, 20th Century Fox decided to do what a majority of movie production companies were doing and already invested in, dusting off old, famous properties, names, and recognition by doing prequels for the big-screen. I’ve always been a fan of ‘The Planet of the Apes’ films. Back in 2011, I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the prequel ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. Even more unexpectedly, the sequel to the prequel, ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, I absolutely loved, and consider it to be the best ‘Planet of the Apes’ film since the 1968 original classic. Now we have the third entry to the prequels, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, and is officially a trilogy. The best trilogy we have gotten in years!

Review-Wonder Woman (2017)

Finally, a movie about the iconic DC Comics character, Wonder Woman has hit the big screen. A character that finally has her own big feature movie, a movie 75 years in the making!
When DC first launched their expanded-cinematic-universe, many fans were not thrilled with the start of this cinematic universe. I personally enjoyed Man of Steel, even though some people argued that Superman was too moody and depressing. That film was followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and fans as well did not react to well to that movie either. I have parts I like about the movie and other parts I can’t stand. I did not like the portrayal of Lex Luthor and how they forced Doomsday into the movie. Suicide Squad had its issues, and many people seemed to give up on DC Comics setting up this expanded-cinematic-universe. Many fans saw Wonder Woman as the last chance for this cinematic universe to work and finally give us a movie in this universe that blows audiences away with action, story, and character development.

The LEGO Batman Movie is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on June 13th!

The story by Seth Grahame-Smith is based on LEGO Construction Toys characters from DC and the screenplay is written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern and John Whittington.
Classic Review – Batman (1989)
Even watching Tim Burton’s Batman now, it still sets the stage for a spectacle and you can see the kind of skill Tim Burton can put into a movie. Right from the beginning, this seems like this could be something big and to be fair, it’s not like there was a lot of superhero movies coming out at the time. Thankfully, it does live up to what a big screen blockbuster should and can be. Granted, some of the effects and the sets are a bit fake looking thanks to the great powers of HD but there’s still a very fun experience to be had here. There’s a lot of money being shown on the screen with the sets, which do a great job at presenting this world. I remember rewatching this a few years ago and I was not particularly blown away by it but there’s something about this recent watch that made me appreciate it more. The thing is that it’s not the kind of movie we see anymore especially from the perspective of a comic book movie. It’s kind of endearing that this was made solely just to tell a story and to entertain but it’s just that. I don’t have to watch 12 more movies to lead up to a franchise just to witness a satisfying end for this movie. Not that that’s bad but I’m in school right now and as a result, I’m not always in the mood for that kind of movie. Anyway, this movie is just called Batman and that’s pretty much what it’s about. I saw Batman do what Batman needed to do and I’m all the more appreciative for that.
Batgirl gets a new artist!
This January, Batgirl is headed home— with a new artist and new villain to kick off the next arc! Artist Christian Wildgoose (GOTHAM ACADEMY) will take over art duties once Rafael Albuquerque’s run concludes with BATGIRL #6. Wildgoose joins writer Hope Larson upon Batgirl’s return home in “Son of Penguin.” Since the launch of Rebirth, Barbara Gordon has left Burnside and Gotham behind for some well-earned time off. Traveling to Japan, Singapore and more she’s been on a quest to train with the most elite masters of the East— as well as taking a break from her everyday crimefighting life. But where she goes, danger always follows.
“I’m still in shock to be working on Batgirl, probably more so than the readers, so I’m feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves as I take on one of my favorite characters,” says Wildgoose. “Despite any nerves, I know I’m in safe hands working with Hope. She’s doing an awesome job with her current run and I’m looking forward to teaming up with her. After Rafael’s run, I know I have some pretty big yellow boots to fill. Hope and Rafael’s amazing work makes Batgirl larger than life and I hope to keep their fire and energy burning. Most of all, I’m going to have fun. I think that’s something even Batgirl would approve of.”
In BATGIRL #7, the Batgirl we know and love returns to Burnside to find an entirely different city than the one she left behind. Due to a boom in tech start-up companies, Burnside is now trendier than ever, leaving Babs to feel out of place in her newly gentrified neighborhood. But it’s not all a loss. She’ll soon meet a dashing and handsome techie named Ethan, only to find out that her striking beau has a familiar last name—Cobblepot! Will her new found romance bring her more trouble than she was ready for? You’ll have to find out.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Christian on this next arc, which will bring Batgirl back to her familiar stomping grounds in Burnside,” says writer Hope Larson. “You can never really go home again, and a lot has changed since she left, both in her friends’ lives and in Burnside, which is rapidly becoming even more gentrified. Most interestingly of all, there’s a new player on the scene: charming, handsome, tech-savvy, and possibly evil Ethan Cobblepot, the Penguin’s son. Christian’s art is fresh, charming, and delightful, and he’s the perfect artist to bring this story to life.”
