Review – The Neon Demon

by Kevin Muller

The simplistic story of a young girl finding fame, fortune, and independence, while losing her innocence, is as old as time itself. Even before movies visualized it, the story was told as a cautionary tale for the young. How do you sell it in a new way that hasn’t been done to death? Well, Nicolas Winding Refn has done it with his new movie “The Neon Demon” and it is one hell of a mind trip.

Spidey’s Comin’ Home

spidey

by Logan Myerz

Spiderman is one of the OGs of the comic book-to-film realm over the past decade and has been portrayed by a few different actors thus far. Old Spidey has been caught in a web of filmmaking politics so to speak, with recasts, reboots, and different scripts. But this time, Peter Parker is finally at home with Sony Pictures in Spiderman: Homecoming, starring the young and talented Tom Holland. The Spiderman character made a guest appearance in the recent Marvel Studios film, Captain America: Civil War which was probably the best onscreen depiction of Peter Parker/Spiderman to date. Even though the on-screen time was short lived, it made a huge impact on the studio and the general audience which begged the question “Why haven’t we received this type of solo Spiderman movie yet?”

Let’s be honest here, Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 1 + 2 were pretty damn good, but the 3rd film was atrocious; Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spiderman films were regurgitated and overall forgettable. We now know that if the audience and fans ask, they will FINALLY receive.

Spiderman: Homecoming has announced some pretty big players in the game that will be starring in this film such as Michael Keaton (Vulture), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), and Donald Glover. But recently, Hollywood Reporter confirmed that AMC’s Better Call Saul star, Michael Mando, (better known as Nacho in the show), was just cast as an unknown character in the movie.

But what’s really extraordinary about this film is Jon Watts (Clown) is directing the film and he’s a young director that doesn’t have a lot of films under his belt. This may be a refreshing take on the Peter Parker character that we needed all along with fresh eyes and a clearer focus.

As the cast list continues to fill up and the filming continues to move forward in Atlanta, we will get to see more updates of the cast and which direction they are moving with the webbed warrior. If anything, it can’t be any worse than Spiderman 3 right?

Spiderman: Homecoming is scheduled for a July 7th, 2017 release date.

Review – Game of Thrones, Season 6

game-of-thrones

by Old King Clancy

Entering its sixth season, Game Of Thrones reached a point that excited and frightened fans in equal measure, while the fifth season had introduced original elements – such as Tyrion meeting Dany – season six would be the first to actively go passed the books and bring in new material, some of which would be unique to the show but some of it spoiling elements that Martin had not yet written.

The Losers’ Club Is Ready for IT

it1

by Logan Myerz

There is one primal fear that most everyone can agree upon: the fear of clowns. The TV mini-series that changed and scarred my life forever was, obviously, Stephen King’s IT. Watching this as a young child and having that terror still surround me in my early 30’s is something that a lot of TV shows and films really lack these days. In 2016, we are doused with remakes, reboots, re-imaginings, and unfortunately they all really lack the focus of what the writers and filmmakers once stood for: originality. With that being said, IT has been around for twenty-five years and still holds up to this day. For a younger generation which may not be familiar with Pennywise and the children he terrorized and killed, he’s making his way to the big screen in 2017 to torture and haunt all over again!

Andy Muschietti (Mama) is taking the directing throne of the newest adaptation based off of the famous novel written by Stephen King. Finn Wolfhard posted a picture on his Instagram account of the new “Losers’ Club” that was taken on set in Toronto.

Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent) plays Bill Denbrough, the leader of The Losers’ Club. Other cast members include Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Uris, Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie Kaspbrak, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom. Owen Teague plays the teen bully Patrick Hockstetter.

It will be interesting to see these young actors take on the evil forces of Pennywise portrayed by Bill Skarsgard (Hemlock Grove). According to Hitfix.com, the story will be cut up into two films with the first film showcasing the children and the second film will be The Loser Club as adults, still facing their fears and overcoming the trauma they succumbed to at a young age.

One thing is for sure, this film will be bringing a larger shock value with more gore and scare tactics with an R rating.

The first film will hit theaters on September 8th, 2017.

Hail to the Zordon!

zordon 1

by Logan Myerz

If you haven’t heard of Bryan Cranston over the past five years, you have likely been buried deep in the New Mexico desert. The rest of us know that he is on top of the world and an ‘A’ list celebrity that has perfected his craft in the film industry. His career has ranged from television and film over the past three decades and today was a HUGE day for Mr. Cranston. On the official Power Rangers Twitter Page, they announced the casting of Zordon. And of course the Internet went berserk.

Bryan is no amateur to the Saban Entertainment realm as he did some voiceover work on two villains (Snizard and Twinman) in the 90’s TV show long before he became the Heisenberg we all know and love. The Mighty Morphan Power Rangers was a pivotal part of my childhood and the casting of this film has been quite superb, but this casting announcement really sets the bar high for the film. The only cast member left is Zordon’s faithful droid Alpha 5, which has not been announced as of yet. Will Mr. Cranston rely on Walter White’s iconic shaved head to portray the galactic sage Zordon? I really hope so; seeing Bryan’s floating opaque noggin on the big screen is enough to the make film worth seeing. The film is scheduled to debut in theaters on March 24th, 2017. It’s Morphin Time!!!!!

Darth Vader is Back in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!

darth1

by Logan Myerz

There has been much speculation that the most famous villain in cinematic history would be returning in the new Star Wars film, Rogue One. But it has been confirmed via Entertainment Weekly that the galactic man in black… no, not Johnny Cash… the heavy breathing Sith Lord, Darth Vader will be returning to the big screen in 2016. On the recent cover of Entertainment Weekly Magazine, it’s hard to miss the bold lettering “DARTH VADER IS BACK!”

darth2

The director of this film, Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), had big shoes to fill with the recent blockbuster success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that didn’t stop him with crafting a stand alone film that showcases how the Rebellion found the schematics and flaw in the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction. If THAT doesn’t sound enticing, I don’t know what does. Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story is already in the process of reshoots this month after the Disney executives were not thrilled with the final product of this film.  This isn’t the first time that studio interference has got in the way of the film making process, as JJ Abrams went through the same thing with the last Star Wars film. Whatever this means, we know it’s for a good cause and I’m sure the final product that hits theaters this December will shatter box office records. It’s hard to conclude how much time Darth Vader will be in this film, but it will for sure leave an imprint on the audience and fans across the galaxy.  We can expect further details on Rogue One throughout the week and more insight on the direction of this film as the clock winds down to the release date later this year.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16th, 2016.
