Review – Waves (2019)

by Armando Vanegas

Waves is the new epic family drama from every millennial’s favorite movie studio A24 and writer/director, Trey Edward Shults. Going into it, I was excited. Mainly because it was Sterling K. Brown aka Randall from This is Us in what looked like a lead role. Also, the trailer, like any for an A24 movie, looked like this was another success in their long ring of successes. I don’t know anything about Shults as a filmmaker, although I heard very good things about his previous movies, It Comes at Night and Krisha. Look, as a black person, there’s not a lot of family dramas in the mold of Terence Malick and Punch Drunk Love coming our way, so the fact that was a movie about a successful black family having nothing to do with them being black in addition to some beautiful cinematography was exciting. I was getting The Place Beyond the Pines feelings as I was hearing about the details about it and the way people were being so elusive about what it specifically was about. It’s cool that movies like this or Sorry to Bother You or Moonlight are finally getting the chance to have a platform to tell stories featuring black centric casts, yet making the stories universal. Having seen the final product, I appreciate what Shults, who happens to be white, did with the ideas he had of telling this story about these very specific individuals and it paid off very well.

Review – Richard Jewell (2019)

By Kevin Muller

We are in a point in history where people are at odds with the news media. While some people swear by CNN/MSNBC, others think that FOX News are the ones who tell the truth. Even our own President has weighed in by creating a catchphrase to describe his feelings about the news organizations. Back in 1996, an event happened that threw a good man through the ringer, and even though he came out clean, it changed his life until his death in 2007. It was a story of a misunderstood hero who was wrongly accused by the press and FBI. Hollywood legend, Clint Eastwood, has decided to bring this story to the big screen.  Is it more like wonderful American Sniper or the mundane The 15:17 to Paris?

Cinephellas Podcast – Episode 56 (Interview with Danny Abeckaser)

On this episode of the Cinephellas Podcast, Henry Hill interviews the director and star of Mob Town, Danny Abeckaser. Danny was gracious enough to share his insight on making the film as well as talking about how he landed a role in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Mob Town tells the true story of the 1957 meeting of over a hundred mafia members in the small town of Apalachin in upstate New York. A state trooper played by David Arquette uncovers the meeting and helps coordinate a raid on it. Henry was able to watch a screener of the film, and while not on the level of a lot of other mob films, he found the film both entertaining and informational.

Saban Films released the thriller Mob Town in theaters, VOD, and Digital HD on December 13th, 2019!
