Review – Dunkirk (2017)

Some movies are made with the sole purpose of being seen on the big screen. In the case of director Christopher Nolan, a majority of his films fall into this category. They are grand in scope and give the viewer the feeling as if they are pedestrians on a city street being towered over by skyscrapers. The cinematography of Nolan’s films always include wide shots showcasing the vastness of the particular setting they are taking place in and always have a very authentic feel to them, placing the viewer in the thick of the story, and making them feel like they are part of a large world. Dunkirk is no different; it was filmed using the large format IMAX cameras and it is a behemoth of a war movie complete with thunderous explosions, a heart-thumping soundtrack, and one of the most harrowing evacuations in history.

Review – Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Stringer Bell from HBO’s The Wire vs. Captain Kirk, who wins? We all do. This is my spoiler-free review of Star Trek Beyond.
Since J.J. Abrams gave us the fantastic 2009 reboot of Star Trek, we’ve all been reminded just how fun it can be to beam up into space and enjoy creator Gene Roddenberry’s space adventures. The new cast with Chris Pine at the helm as Captain James Tiberius Kirk have a great chemistry on screen together and they make you willing to follow them wherever they choose to boldly go. The sequel, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, solidified the staying power of the new crew and gave the Federation a worthy adversary in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch’s John Harrison (Or was it something else, hmm…).
Review – Stranger Things (2016)

The newest Netflix Original series Stranger Things is a terrific throwback to the Spielberg movies of the ‘80s. Think Goonies meets E.T. Meets John Carpenter’s The Thing. Featuring a Carpenter-esque theme song and score, Stranger Things is full of horror, mystery, drama and most of all, fun. It is full of fun easter eggs that will have viewers pausing and rewinding to see what they can spot in the background. Posters for films like Jaws and The Evil Dead hang on the walls in the kids bedrooms and The Clash’s hit 1982 song “Should I Stay or Should I Go” is played on the record player. Needless to say, after five episodes I am hooked.
Review – The House of the Devil (2009)

Sometimes a movie comes along that has been out for several years before you discover it, and immediately after watching it, you want to tell all your friends about how much you liked it. 2009’s Horror The House of the Devil is one of those films. It was recommended to me by a friend, and after watching it, I highly recommend you do the same. Fans of the horror genre clamoring for movies like the classics of the 80s will especially enjoy Ti West’s twisted tale.
